Instructions for Your Kindle

You can get ebooks, magazines or music on your Kindle device for free with the Ohio Digital Library, Zinio Magazines and Freegal Music.

I want ebooks.

  1. Kindle Fire users, download this app: OverDrive Media Console
  2. All users, browse for titles: Ohio Digital Library
  3. Checkout and download books.
  4. Choose Kindle format.*

*Note: Kindle Fire users, you also have the option to download ePUB and MP3 format titles via the app.

You can keep books for up to 3 weeks, 10 items at a time per account.

I want magazines. (Kindle Fire only)

The Zinio App does not yet appear in the Amazon App store. To manually add the Zinio App, follow the instructions below.

  1. Go to Zinio Help on your Kindle's web browser.
  2. Click on Having trouble finding the Zinio app for Amazon's KINDLE FIRE?.
  3. Click on the link provided in Step 2 to download the .APK file.
  4. A new screen with the heading "Temporary alternate download…" comes up.
  5. To install the app, swipe your finger down from the topmost left-hand corner of the screen (where your name appears), then click on the Zinio installation notice.
  6. Log in with your Zinio username and password.

Note: the Zinio app on the Kindle Fire may give a pop-up notice that the app is not working properly. Ignore it. Acknowledge the pop-up and keep working.

Once you've checked out a magazine, you can always find it later in your Zinio account. There's no wait, no fines and no need to return it.

I want music.

For a 1st generation Kindle, follow these instructions. For the Kindle Fire, follow the instructions below.

  1. On your Kindle Fire, go to Settings.
  2. Enable "Download from unknown sources".
  3. Go to SlideMe.org on your Kindle's web browser.
  4. Search for "freegal music".
  5. Download the app.
  6. To install the app, swipe your finger down from the topmost left-hand corner of the screen (where your name appears), then click on the Freegal installation notice.
  7. Launch the app.
  8. Enter your zip code.
  9. Choose Westerville Public Library.
  10. Enter your library card number.

Alternatively, you can download songs directly from the Freegal Music website. Find a song, then select Download Now. A number will appear at the top of your screen. Once the song is downloaded, you can touch it to open it in the Amazon MP3 player.

Once you've downloaded a song, there are no fines and there is no need to return it.
