From mindful breathing to world affairs, seniors of all ages, abilities, and interests are strengthening their ties to the community and enriching their lives with engaging and thoughtful programs hosted by Marie C, Outreach Program Librarian at the Westerville Public Library.
One innovative and interaction option has been a program called Timeslips where memory care residents create a story using words, sounds, movements, images, and imagination. This practice uses creative engagement to invite joyful expression. "I work with people in memory care, guiding them with open-ended questions to create a story based on a photo. This is the photo we used and oh my goodness, they all did a fantastic job! Creativity is a powerful way to connect," shares Marie.
Surprise, Surprise!
Story created by Memory Care Residents in 2019
In the living room, late in the evening. It’s dark, the windows are black. They are husband and wife. The wife is Jane and her husband is Bob. They met at church and were very excited to meet each other. They had to hide from who was coming in to see. Who was coming? It was their parents! They hid because they were up to...having fun. They are feeling scared. They are listening for their parents. Their parents are surprised to see them!
The parents say “what’s going on?!” And the kids replied “nothing!” They don’t believe them because they are behind the couch. They either did or didn’t do it. What did they do? Your guess is as good as mine!! They parents want the truth! They were hiding. They realize what’s going on. And the parents were not happy. The kids have to do something to redeem themselves. By telling the truth!
Another favorite is Remember When storytime. Marie starts by reading a story aloud, then using music, pictures, and props to jog memories based on common experiences and topics.
One way to remain active in civic participation is by learning about world affairs through the Great Decisions Discussion Group. Every month, they read an article and watch a documentary, then come together to discuss what they learned. In a time of extreme divisiveness, participants learn from each other and engage in a respectful exchange of opinions.
Marie is also passionate about promoting heath and wellness. Through her Mindful Breathing workshops, she's seen people make real life changes and improve their wellbeing in small but meaningful ways. "One participant shared that he now uses the box breathing technique and it works! He’s able to sleep much better. Another participant said that she now does deep belly breathing when she’s at a red light to stay calm and focused." She also leverages her certification as a nature & forest therapy guide to host nature walks and a nature-focused book club to encourage the healing power of slowing down in nature.
